Jack Denham - Overseas Fieldwork Funding Success

Jack Denham (PhD student) has been awarded £1900.00 by the White Rose DTC on behalf of the AQC in order to undertake fieldwork in the USA.

The trip will start with a visit to America's biggest crime museum in Washington DC. Two days are set-aside for an ethnography of the museum and another for follow up interviews. The middle part of the trip is the longest accommodating a visit to America's biggest murderabilia convention, followed by one week set aside for interviews with contacts made at the event.

During this week, a trip to the 'Dime Museum', a popular murderabilia collection in Indianapolis, will also be made. Finally, the trip accommodates a visit to a crime museum in Hollywood boasting the largest murderabilia collection in the world over two days again. This trip has been arranged with the assistance of a gatekeeper with access to many interviewees during the week stopover in Indianapolis.

This trip will contribute a physical dimension to the networks addressed in Jack's proposal, providing valuable first-hand visual data as well as invaluable contacts in this industry. This exposure will also help with an understanding of the value of criminal culture to the consumer - data collected here will form the bulk of the research for his PhD.

York Masters Scholarships 2014/15 - New

The University of York is offering 60 taught Masters scholarships worth £10,000 each to students liable to pay fees at the home rate entering in 2014. This is part of a HEFCE initiative aimed at removing barriers to postgraduate education for students from under-represented groups,

The £10,000 will be paid as a £6,200 fee waiver and £3,800 stipend paid in 4 instalments over the academic year.

Dr Xiaodong Lin's New Book: Gender, Modernity and Male Migrant Workers in China: Becoming a 'Modern' Man

Examining Chinese male migrant workers’ identity formation, this book explores their experience of rural-urban migration and their status as an emerging sector of a dislocated urban working class. It seeks to understand issues of gender and class through the rural migrant men’s narratives within the context of China’s modernization, and provides an in-depth analysis of how these men make sense of their new lives in the rapidly modernizing, post-Mao China with its emphasis on progress and development. Further, this book uses the men’s own narratives to challenge the elite assumption that rural men’s low status is a result of their failure to adopt a modern urban identity and lifestyle. Drawing on interviews with 28 male rural migrants, Xiaodong Lin unpacks the gender politics of Chinese men and masculinities, and in turn contributes to a greater understanding of global masculinities in an international context.

European Sociological Association PhD Summer School at York University,UK July 2014

The European Sociological Association PhD Summer School will be held at York University July 27th-29th 2014.

PhD students from all over Europe will come to York to debate 'A Sociological Imagination for the 21st Century', to network with other scholars, and to give oral presentations of a draft article related to their PhDs.

The Summer School is Directed by Prof Ellen Annandale from York. Other teachers are: Prof Maria Carmela Agodi (University of Naples), Prof Ricca Edmondson (National University of Ireland), Prof Robert Fine (Warwick University) and Prof Tally Katz-Gerro (University of Haifa).

Celia Kitzinger's research is reported in the Daily Mail

The sisters of a woman left severely brain damaged after she was injured in a car crash have published a study highlighting family concerns about how permanent vegetative patients are treated. 

Jenny, a professor in the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University and Celia, sociology professor at the University of York, hope their research, published in the respected Journal of Medical Ethics, will help inform debate about ways of dying when people become catastrophically disabled through illness or injury.

The paper, written by university professors Celia and Jenny Kitzinger calls for family perspectives to be taken in to account.
