Conversation Analysis: An Introduction and Overview 12 June 2017

In the last thirty years, Conversation Analysis has become the preeminent method for the analysis of naturally occurring interaction. Despite its name, CA studies all forms of talk-in-interaction in institutional or work related settings as well as in ordinary conversation. It also studies embodied behaviours such as gaze, gesture, and movement. 

In this course, we introduce the history and principles of CA, sketch some of its main analytic procedures, and show how it offers a indepth view of how we use talk in social interaction, and how these analytic practices inform a radical methodology in sociology.

This course is recommended for people with no prior knowledge of CA who just want to get a basic understanding of its distinctive approach, and those who intend to go on to take the more technical CA skills training programmes offered in the Department.

Conversation Analysis Short Course - Repair

Developing Conversation Analytic Skills 3: Repair (3 days) (SPACES STILL AVAILABLE)

Tutors to include: Sue Wilkinson and Celia Kitzinger

Date: Tues 11 – Thurs 13 October

Pre-requisites: Developing Conversation Analytic Skills 1 and 2 (Turn-taking and Sequence Organisation)

This course is one of two – on repair and on word selection – designed to provide further core training in conversation analysis (CA).

It will provide a systematic grounding in the CA domain of repair.  It will be an intensive course, limited to 12 participants.  The course will be taught via mini-lectures, practical activities and exercises, with an emphasis on hands-on work with data.  It is intended for those with some prior familiarity with CA – especially turn-taking and sequence organisation – who want to acquire key skills for working with conversational data.  It is not necessary for participants to have their own data set.

Conversation Analysis, Merran Toerien and Visiting Fellow At Rhodes University

It's with great pleasure that Merran Toerien has accepted an honorary appointment as Visiting Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Rhodes University, South Africa (from 5 May 2016 to 31 December 2018).  

This follows on from extensive collaboration between colleagues in Sociology at York and Psychology at Rhodes and formally recognises the dynamic and productive exchange that has occurred over several years - relating both to research and teaching.   

Catriona Macleod says that Merran 'has contributed significantly to developing capacity in conversation analysis at Rhodes, and has been a wonderful collaborator on our abortion counselling project'

Conversation Analysis Workshop in London

Sue Wilkinson, Merran Toerien and Celia Kitzinger (University of York) will be running 'An Introduction to Conversation Analysis' on 24 May 2016 in London.

The one-day workshop is designed for those with little or no previous knowledge of conversation analysis, who would like to find out more about it, and/or are interested in assessing whether the approach may be useful in their own research or practice. The workshop will cover how conversation analytic research is done, some of its key empirical findings, and some of its key applications.
