New Editorial Board Member of Work, Employment and Society

Dr Xiaodong Lin has been elected to join the Editorial Board of the British Sociological Assocation (BSA) journal Work, Employment and Society. 

This international peer-reviewed journal of the BSA, analyses all forms of work and their relation to wider social processes and structures, and to quality of life. It embraces the study of the labour process; industrial relations; changes in labour markets; and the gender and domestic divisions of labour. It supports contemporary, historical and comparative studies and both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Xiaodong Lin and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

Dr Xiaodong Lin has been appointed as a Member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Peer Review College in the category of academic. The appointment runs from 1^st October 2015 to 31 December 2018. The Peer Review College plays a vital role in the AHRC's peer review systems. Members of the College are academic experts covering the full range of arts and humanities research areas, who review and grade proposals for funding from the AHRC.

BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants Success

Congratulations to both Prof Paul Johnson and Dr Xiaodong Lin who have both been awarded British Academy small research grants for their projects on 'Faith in Policing: The Co-Production of Crime Control' and 'Revisiting rural-urban migrant men in China: exploring aspirations, youth and masculinities' respectively.

These grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences.

Dr Xiaodong Lin's New Book: Gender, Modernity and Male Migrant Workers in China: Becoming a 'Modern' Man

Examining Chinese male migrant workers’ identity formation, this book explores their experience of rural-urban migration and their status as an emerging sector of a dislocated urban working class. It seeks to understand issues of gender and class through the rural migrant men’s narratives within the context of China’s modernization, and provides an in-depth analysis of how these men make sense of their new lives in the rapidly modernizing, post-Mao China with its emphasis on progress and development. Further, this book uses the men’s own narratives to challenge the elite assumption that rural men’s low status is a result of their failure to adopt a modern urban identity and lifestyle. Drawing on interviews with 28 male rural migrants, Xiaodong Lin unpacks the gender politics of Chinese men and masculinities, and in turn contributes to a greater understanding of global masculinities in an international context.
